Begegnung – is a very powerful yet kind and gentle word in German that cannot be easily translated into English. It means to meet someone who touches your heart and soul, to spend some time together, to be inspired by the other, to connect and to learn about this person you meet. It is so much more than a meeting. Yet much less formal. It’s a lot more personal, spiritual and it has more meaning and depth. It can change you. Lift you up. Move you. Make you think. And it will always leave a mark in your heart. Create a memory. Become a part of you.
And sometimes, when you have a “Begegnung” with person you just know that you are meant to be friends, to connect, to exchange your thoughts and to enjoy each others company to the fullest. In this very moment. Most importantly, you know you can just be yourself. No need to proof something or pretend to be stronger than you are. That’s the real deal. And it doesn’t take more than a few minutes to know if you have that connection with someone. It’s almost instant. Bang.
Sweet Kina is one of these special people to me. We met at the Photo Field Trip in Santa Barbara – and connected – instantly. I immediately felt comfortable around her. As if I had known her for a long time. But we just met.
Needless to say that after field trip we were not ready to part ways yet – and decided to spent a wonderful day in the Mountains of Santa Ynez together. Relax. Enjoy the views, the light, the silence. Laugh. Be silly. Feel alive. Reflect. And yes – we did bring our cameras to take some photos of each other. For fun. No pressure. Just to enjoy us and our art. We celebrated life that day. Simple as that.
My sweet friend Kina – these images are for you. To remember our day together. I hope these will make you happy and inspire you to follow your dreams. Always!
Dear friends and fellow photographers!
It is here – our two day photography workshop filled with learning, networking and lots of hands on shooting. Registration opened last week and we are starting to fill the seats with amazing artists – young and old – digital and film shooters alike. So secure your spot and join us for this amazing experience.
We are excited to announce our collaboration with the talented teams at Stacie Shea Events and WellWed Magazine. Stacie (owner at SSE) will be styling the shoot on the first day and be there for the entire workshop. She will gladly answer any questions about working with an event planner and alike. Krista Washburn is the Editor in Chief of WellWed Magazine and she will be styling the editorial shoot on day two for us – as well as do a walk thru and share her insights on what publishers are looking for in your images.
This workshop is being sponsored by amazing companies and vendors of the industry – including Artifacts Uprising, Photo Impact Imaging (my trusted Lab) and Dustin Davis – (Web Design).
This workshop is designed for photographers who have started their wedding photography business in the last few years and are looking to take their photography to the next level, want to network, build their portfolios and have fun. Furthermore, this workshop will introduce the attendees to film photography and what makes it special/beneficial. Weather or not you would like to just try it out for fun, plan to use it for personal projects or are planning to incorporating film into your existing business – you will enjoy this little journey. It is of course up to every attendee to choose their medium for the shoots – or to mix and match and try it all.
Here is a little excerpt – to give you the scoop of what this workshop has to offer.

I am looking forward to seeing you in May!
Lauren is such a sweetheart. After talking about taking her portraits on film for a while, we finally arranged for a date this winter. Lauren’s energetic, outgoing and fun personality is so much fun to be around and it shines thru in all the photographs. It was a pleasure to capture her amongst her animals in a place she dearly loves. She has a contagious smile and is such a natural beauty. Creating these film portraits of her was a blast and I hope to get to take more photos of her in the future.

Give the ones you love wings to fly, roots to come back and reasons to stay.
You have done all that and so much more. You taught me to crawl, walk, run, jump and sing, you helped me up when I was down, encouraged me to try new things and be myself, laughed and cried with me, supported my dreams – no matter how crazy or unconventional they might have been in times, supported my adventures, explored with me the colors and cultures of this world (I can’t even count how many magical places we visited together – from Italy and Spain to Hawaii and Thailand) and together with dad you showed me that it is ok to dream big, reach for the moon and fight for the things you believe in. You offered your guidance when I wanted it but gave me room to wander, experience and make my own discoveries – only to then sit and listen to my stories. You gave me so much freedom (even let me travel to Brazil with 16) and inspired me to be creative. I have no idea how many art projects we did together – and how many times I was covered in paint from head to toe. And more often then not – you were right there with me – sporting a green nose and blue hands as well. And of course we also had our fair share of arguments and disagreements – but even those taught me some important lessons: how to forgive and that it is ok to be wrong – and won’t hurt to admit it, how important it is to say sorry and make compromises – or in other times stand up for your dreams and put up a little fight (and yes – I sometimes tried to go with my head thru the wall – in good aries tradition – but you accepted me for me – and that was ok, too).
Thanks to you, I am the person I am today – full of curiosity and open to new adventures – yet sensitive and loving to snuggle and hug – always watching out over the ones I love.
It saddens me to not be able to hug you today on your birthday – and to hold you tide and to tell you how much I love you. I wish I could celebrate you – laugh with you and spoil you rotten. But I know dad will take care of that today – and that the two of you will have a wonderful day – and a yummy glass of wine tonight – (or let’s be real – make that two or three glasses).
I cannot wait to see you in May – and I hope you are ready for new adventures.
Mom – I love you more than words can say.

My German home town Duesseldorf still holds a very special place in my heart. This is the place where I grew up and where all my happy childhood memories were made. I remember going to the local farmer with my grandma in the evenings to get a can of fresh raw milk (you know – the kind that you need to shake before your drink it), riding my horse thru the fields, playing with friends and just being “out and about” all day. Back then, I took this great freedom and being worry-free for granted. But today I know that for many children this is not the norm – and I am even more grateful now that I got to enjoy this wonderful childhood.
So when my friend Vicki came to visit me in Germany, we teamed up with Ellen of Frieda Theres and did this beautiful bohemian wedding shoot. It not only took place in my home town – but all of a sudden I was surrounded by the happiness and beautiful setting I grew up in. It felt so right – and so magical at the same time. Lastly, we included a horse of a friend of mine and I swear my heart skipped a beat (or two). I was transported back to my childhood years – all the familiar smells and sounds and the gorgeous light that I had enjoyed so many nights when out with my friends were back – and I was lucky to be able to capture some gorgeous photos of a sweet couple which is head over heals in love. These two kept giving each other the sweetest looks thru-out the day – and you could feel their connection and chemistry. It filled me with so much joy that I can’t even put it into words.
Needless to say this shot is near and dear to my heart and I am excited to share these images with you.

Lauren and Cara.
Family is priceless. Your family will catch you when you fall and lift you back on your feet when you are struggling to get up. They have a shoulder to lean on and don’t care if you call them in the middle of the night to pore out your heart. They will laugh with you and celebrate with you – and give you wings to fly as well as roots to ground you. The connection between two sisters is said to be extra tight and special – and I don’t doubt that for a minute. Lauren and Cara are the best examples of this. A great friendship connects these two sisters and I feel honored that I was allowed to witness and capture this special bond between these two amazing young ladies. Xoxo!
